My 5-Year Journey in a Cutting-Edge Gene Therapy Trial
Medical history runs in my family but not the kind you want. We carry a rare genetic disorder, and over the years, several of my relatives have stepped up to participate in clinical trials. They did it to help find answers.
The Reality of Cutting-Edge Medicine
Signing up for a global trial isn't just about showing up to a local clinic. For me, it meant international travel, navigating complex logistics, and spending significant periods away from home.
I’m now three years into this five-year journey, and it has evolved quite a bit:
The Early Days: Initially, it was intense. Visits were frequent and packed with a whole raft of tests. Some were simple, like hearing and lung function checks, while others were much more invasive, including biopsies.
Where I Am Now: Three years in, the pace has happily slowed down. The number of hospital visits and at-home nurse check-ins has decreased significantly, allowing life to feel a bit more normal again.
It Takes a Village
Participating in a trial like this is a massive commitment. The travel, the scheduling, and the physical toll of the tests require a lot of juggling.
But what makes it manageable is the incredible team behind the scenes. Every single party involved, from the coordinators to the doctors and nurses, is profoundly dedicated. They work tirelessly to handle the heavy lifting and make the entire experience as seamless and easy as possible for patients like me.
Looking to the Future
I count myself incredibly lucky. Not only did I get accepted into this trial, but it has also been highly successful for me to date.
Living with a rare disorder can often feel isolating, but being part of this research gives me an immense sense of purpose. My hope is that by seeing this through to the five-year mark, I can help pave the way for a brighter future both for the next generation of my family dealing with this disorder, and for anyone else whose life could be transformed by gene therapy.”
